If you’ve followed CCM Professor, you already know my passion: shining a bright light on the artistry,
impact, and legacy of Contemporary Christian Music. Over the years, Christian music has produced songs that did more than
chart well — they comforted, challenged, taught, and pointed people toward hope.
This series is my attempt to answer a big question with a daily, bite-sized approach:
What are the greatest songs in Christian music — and why?
Starting at #100 and working our way toward #1, I’ll publish one post per day,
each focused on a single song.
Important note: This countdown isn’t a “perfect” list — it’s a thoughtful list.
You may disagree with some rankings (and I actually hope you do). The conversation is part of the fun.
How I’m Defining “Greatest”
“Greatest” doesn’t always mean “biggest hit.” For this series, I’m weighing a blend of factors:
- Impact: Did the song move the needle for Christian music?
- Longevity: Does it still resonate years (or decades) later?
- Craft: Melody, lyric clarity, arrangement, performance, and production.
- Reach: Radio, church usage, crossover influence, and cultural footprint.
- Story: The context behind the song — and what it meant to listeners.
I’ll embed lyrics to each song while focusing on themes, history, and commentary.
